Backstage is a cultural centre in Munich popular with fans of alternative music. It is located on Friedenheimer Brücke in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg neighbourhood. As a project for youth events Backstage has existed since 11 January 1991, and it has settled at its current location after several moves. Almost everyone in Munich has been to Backstage at least once, because it is one of the best places in the city for parties and live music. It hosts concerts, festivals, theatre productions, dance events, sports broadcasts, school balls, exhibitions and flea markets.
The range of musical genres at Backstage is wide. Everything is represented here: from hip-hop to reggae, from alternative and electronic music to rock, funk and soul. There are several rooms with varying capacities for events. The largest room of them all is the Backstage Werk with an area of about 800 m², equipped with high quality lighting and sound technology, 2 bars and a cloakroom. In the Backstage, on a total area of 3600 m², various events can take place simultaneously and visitors can also relax in the outdoor area with a spacious beer garden.
Every year Backstage hosts the Free & Easy festival with numerous free concerts and parties. The original aim of the event was to give previously unknown local bands and musicians the opportunity to showcase themselves on the festival stage alongside established German and international artists. Every year, from late July to mid-August, more than 50,000 visitors come to Backstage to enjoy the live performances and DJ parties of Munich’s internationally renowned festival.
