The ensemble BASIANI, whose work is rightly characterised by the words “perfect”, “beautiful” and “impressive”, was founded in 2000 by soloists of the choir of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi with the blessing of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II.

The name of the ensemble “Basiani” comes from the historical region in the south-west of Georgia, which is now part of Turkey. It was here in 1203 that the famous battle between the valiant Georgian royal army and the enemy took place. The victory gained then further strengthened the position of the then Georgia in the Middle East.

For Georgia, the Battle of Basiani is associated with love for the homeland, self-sacrifice, unity and victories achieved through joint efforts. The choir’s soloists also serve their favourite cause with the same dedication: young singers from traditional singing dynasties began their creative path in children’s folklore groups in Georgia.

Since its foundation, the BASIANI ensemble has been popularising Georgian traditional vocal polyphony. For twenty years, the ensemble has travelled to different regions of Georgia, restored and revived many forgotten gems of folklore, recorded and published about 300 singing samples, which have spread all over the world!

Nowadays BASIANI is an ensemble with a busy concert schedule, whose world tours are always a success thanks to its distinctive singing peculiarities unique to the Georgian people and its unique repertoire of ancient Georgian, Byzantine and Syrian spiritual songs.

The New York Times described the ensemble’s performance as “exquisite, stellar and beautiful”. The geography of the artists’ tours covers many countries of the world. Their fame has gone far beyond the borders of their native Georgia. They have been applauded by audiences in England, the USA, the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, and on 4 December BASIANI will perform an anniversary programme in Riga.
